Wisdom Teeth Pain

Wisdom teeth also known as third molars are the last teeth to erupt. Wisdom teeth may become a problem for you as they grow and develop in each corner of your mouth. Problems often develop gradually since development normally spans several years. Nevertheless, these gradual changes can cause sudden and severe pain. Understanding why such things can happen may help you to deal with these problems, or better still, to encourage you to take preventive measures before they occur.

The oral surgeon then explores your mouth and examines you, telling you the options. If he needs to cut your teeth out then he will give you the option of local anesthesia or IV sedation. Most wisdom teeth extraction is done under general as it is easier on the patient. IV (intravenous) sedation is the preferred way as you will be relaxed and not remember any of it. To be honest the pain level for a local anesthesia is not that bad, it is more of the sounds that you hear: the cracking of teeth and the popping sounds that is rather nauseating.

For typical wisdom teeth that have been developed outside of the gums the dentist will be able to extract these teeth just like with any other type of tooth. The tooth extraction process will work in that the teeth will become numb through the use of an anesthetic. The sockets of the wisdom teeth will be loosened so that they will be removed with ease. Pliers that work with extracting teeth will work in this case. After this is done some temporary pain medication may be provided to the patient to take care of any potential pains that could occur.

According to recent medical evidence most people don't need their wisdom teeth removed, even if the teeth are impacted. In fact some evidence suggests that removing healthy impacted wisdom teeth is not advised due to the risk of nerve damage. There are actually many other life altering complications from getting wisdom teeth out including death that many are not aware of. It is estimated that about 1 in 20 people will have complications from the procedure.

Nerves in your mouth may be damaged during surgery to remove your lower wisdom teeth. The lingual nerve may be permanently damaged in up to 1 in 100 people which is the nerve that helps you sense pain and temperature in your mouth. Dentists and surgeons often use an instrument called a lingual nerve retractor to move the nerve out of the way. But this can actually increase the risk of damage. The inferior alveolar nerve can also be damaged.

A soft diet may be prescribed for the patient for a few days following surgery. You can gradually return to a normal diet once any jaw stiffness has settled. Very hot drinks and spicy food can increase pain and bleeding and should be avoided until the gum has healed. Also avoid alcohol as alcohol can increase bleeding and delay healing.Most people do not experience any complications after having their wisdom teeth removed.
